Working with Clips and editing in premiere Pro_ Part 7

Working with Clips

When working on project, often numerous clips are created over time. These clips are basically the original file itself or a reference of the file.

Source Clip or Master Clip

The source or master clip is a clip that has been imported into the project. Usually, trimmed clips  in the project are derived from the source clip.

Clip Instance

A Clip Instance is a clip in a sequence dependent on a source clip. Everytime you add a clip into a sequence, an instance of the source clip is created. For any clip instance, upon creation a clip instance uses the name and source file reference used by the source clip. The clip instance can be viewed in the Source Monitor along with its instance name, sequence name, and the In and Out points.

Duplicate Clip

Once a clip has been imported into the Project panel, the source clip appears in the Project panel’s list. A Duplicate  clip is an independent copy of the original clip in the Project panel. Even if the duplicate clip were to be deleted, the original clip will still be retained. The source and duplicate clips can be renamed independently. To create a duplicate clip, select the clip in the Project panel.

Clip Duration and Speed

You can change the clip duration and speed. There are various ways to change the clip duration and speed in a project. Increasing the speed of the video decreases the duration of the video and vice versa.

·       The speed for the video clips on the timeline can also be adjusted using Time Remapping option.  Select video clip in Timeline Panel and access the Effects Control panel.  Click the triangle beside the Time Remapping effect.  This will make the Speed value available.  Click the triangle beside the speed option to reveal the Velocity values.  Click and then drag the horizontal line to vary the speed of the clip.

·        Select the clip > right click > Speed and duration.

Freezing a Video Frame

At any point of time you can freeze a frame of a clip for a certain duration of time, where it can act like a still image. The video resumes from the point where you turn off the frame freeze.  To freeze a particular frame of a clip, use the Frame Hold command.

Select a clip > Right Click >  Frame Hold
